Economic growth NZ

Seasonally adjusted real GDP grew 0.2% from the previous quarter (Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa, Jun 2026 qtr).

Updated

Quarterly GDP, seasonally adjusted: real GDP (production measure), its quarterly percentage change, real GDP per person, and nominal GDP.

The total value of goods and services produced in New Zealand each year (years ending March). Shown in current prices (nominal) and in real terms (chain-volume, removing the effect of price changes).

Quarterly figures are revised, sometimes substantially. The % change series is a rate; a 'technical recession' is commonly described as two consecutive quarters of falling real GDP.

Output, household income and population describe different parts of the economy. Dividing a total by population gives a per person figure, while adjusting dollars for inflation helps compare their buying power across years.

Read the period beside each number before comparing it with another figure. A monthly observation, a quarterly result and a financial year cover different spans of time. The latest release can also revise earlier observations. The chart and downloads keep the published periods so you can check which figures are being compared. A change in economic growth describes what happened during that period; it does not by itself explain why it happened or identify the effect of a government policy. Definitions and coverage matter as much as the size of a change.

Economic growth: definitions

Gross domestic product (quarterly)

Quarterly GDP, seasonally adjusted: real GDP (production measure), its quarterly percentage change, real GDP per person, and nominal GDP.

Gross domestic product (annual)

The total value of goods and services produced in New Zealand each year (years ending March). Shown in current prices (nominal) and in real terms (chain-volume, removing the effect of price changes).

GDP per person (annual)

Gross domestic product divided by population, as published by Stats NZ, for years ending March from 1992. The real (chain-volume) measure strips out inflation so years can be compared; real gross national disposable income per person is shown alongside.

Economic growth: comparison limits

These affect how far the figures can be compared.

Gross domestic product (quarterly)

  • Quarterly figures are revised, sometimes substantially.
  • The % change series is a rate; a 'technical recession' is commonly described as two consecutive quarters of falling real GDP.

Gross domestic product (annual)

  • Nominal and real GDP use different measures (expenditure vs production) as published by Stats NZ.
  • GDP is revised as more information arrives.

GDP per person (annual)

  • Average output per person, not income received by a typical household.
  • Real values are in chain-volume dollars of Stats NZ's reference year, so they are comparable over time but not with today's dollars.

Economic growth by NZ government
