Updated
Inflation-adjusted house price indexes from the OECD for New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Canada, the US and the OECD as a whole, quarterly from 1990 (2015 = 100).
The OECD's price-to-income ratio: nominal house prices divided by nominal disposable income per person, as an index (2015 = 100), quarterly from 1990. Rising values mean houses are getting less affordable relative to incomes.
Indexes show change over time within each country (2015 = 100); they do not show which country's houses cost more. Real = deflated by each country's consumer prices.
A regional rent can change when the mix of newly rented properties changes. The national median gives the middle rent across new rentals, with half above it and half below it.
Read the period beside each number before comparing it with another figure. A monthly observation, a quarterly result and a financial year cover different spans of time. The latest release can also revise earlier observations. The chart and downloads keep the published periods so you can check which figures are being compared. A change in house prices describes what happened during that period; it does not by itself explain why it happened or identify the effect of a government policy. Definitions and coverage matter as much as the size of a change.
