Household incomes NZ

Median annual household income before tax was $109,556 (Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa, Year to Jun 2025).

Updated

Median and mean annual household income from Stats NZ's Household Economic Survey, years ended June 2007–2025: gross income (before tax), disposable income (after tax and transfers), equivalised disposable income (adjusted for household size), and equivalised disposable income after housing costs.

Median household disposable income and median equivalised disposable income (before and after housing costs), in constant Year to Jun 2025 prices, showing whether typical household incomes have kept up with prices.

Survey estimates with sampling error (published with each value); small year-to-year changes may not be significant. The median is the better guide to a typical household; the mean is pulled up by high incomes.

Household income combines income across household members. The median describes the middle household, while an average is affected by the largest incomes. Before tax and after tax figures answer different questions about the same household.

Read the period beside each number before comparing it with another figure. A monthly observation, a quarterly result and a financial year cover different spans of time. The latest release can also revise earlier observations. The chart and downloads keep the published periods so you can check which figures are being compared. A change in household incomes describes what happened during that period; it does not by itself explain why it happened or identify the effect of a government policy. Definitions and coverage matter as much as the size of a change.

Household incomes: comparison limits

These affect how far the figures can be compared.

Household incomes in New Zealand

  • Survey estimates with sampling error (published with each value); small year-to-year changes may not be significant.
  • The median is the better guide to a typical household; the mean is pulled up by high incomes.
  • Dollars are not adjusted for inflation; compare with CPI or use the inflation-adjusted view.
  • After-housing-costs income shows what is left after rent or mortgage, rates and insurance.

Household incomes, adjusted for inflation

  • Deflated by the all-groups CPI; housing costs for renters and mortgage holders rose differently from the CPI in some years, which is why the after-housing-costs measure is shown too.
  • Survey estimates with sampling error.
