Prices are rising faster than pay rates

Updated

Consumer prices rose 4.1% in the year to the June 2026 quarter. Pay rates for the same jobs rose 2.0%. Prices have risen faster for five quarters in a row.

Pay rates come from the Labour Cost Index, which tracks pay for the same job over time. It leaves out raises from promotions and job changes, so it is not the same as average earnings.
